Hi, I'm new to tribe.net and just found your group. I'm in to natural dyes, nalbinding, several types of weaving, and I'd like to learn how to spin wool on a drop spindle. I'd also like to get back into surface design soon.
I really enjoyed seeing the photos of artwork. I look forward to seeing some more!

Re: New to Tribe
Thu, December 14, 2006 - 8:41 PMWelcome! I thought about doing natural dyes for a while, but then found out that they are really bad for the environment, so I decided not to do them. But I do love to dye, I also spin, crochet, and knit a little. I just got the new Kromski spinning wheel. The sonata. Yay! -

Re: New to Tribe
Fri, December 15, 2006 - 9:28 AMIt totally depends on the natural dye process you use. Sure, if you are using Chrome or Tin as a mordant then yes it is bad for the enviroment. But Alum is imminently safe and works fine as a mordant for most dye plants.
Indigo uses a little lye and small amounts of thiorea. Neither horrifyingly awful in small amounts.
You can get colors in natural dye that you just can't get in chemical dyes. With a little care and research you can natural dye safely for both you and the environment.
You should take a look at it again. It's worth it. -

Re: New to Tribe
Fri, December 15, 2006 - 4:06 PMSome dyestuffs even contain tannin (like walnuts), which acts as its own mordant. As I learned the first (and last) time I hulled walnuts bare handed!
Either way, I feel much safer using natural ingredients rather than chemical dyes.

Re: New to Tribe
Fri, December 15, 2006 - 5:50 PMWelcome! Another nalbinder!
What do you make from it and what kind of stitches do you use? At the moment I am working on a hat in the Mammen stitch. But I like to experiment and combine.
Did you ever try to combine sprang and nalbinding? Works like a charm.

Re: New to Tribe
Fri, December 15, 2006 - 8:28 PMI use what I think is called the Oslo stitch. I've made socks, mittens, and am working on three fingered mittens (if you're familiar with Star Trek, it looks like you're giving the Vulcan "Live Long and Prosper" sign). I checked out your website Vikinggirl. I really like the the little hat.
I'm afraid I haven't done any sprang yet. I'd like to work on a little hairnet. -

Sat, December 16, 2006 - 4:35 AMThanks hun, yeh I have to update my website. I have sooo much more. But that is the fun of combining stitches. Then you can get weird effects.
Haha, three fingered glove. Now THAT is an idea!! I would love to see pics of that.
Reminds me a bit about the Roman split toe socks.
