weird comments

When doing a demo with the fiber, there are always people who ask the strangest questions. Or give comments that just leave you speechless.
What are the strangest comments you got?

These are my toppers from yesterday:
* ( drop spinning)
- "Hey look... its some sort of Indi'n toy..."

* ( a 15-ish year old girl fondling the felted slippers)
- "are these real?"
~ (???)... define real? Yes, those are real slippers...(?)
-"and how about this" ( felted bag with long outerhairs of sheep. So it is still shaggy)
~ What do you mean by "real.."?
- Is this real animal?
~ Yes, the sheep got a haircut and I made it into a felted bag. 100% wool.
- "IIIIIIIIiiiiiiieeeeeeuuuuuuuwwwwwwwwww" ( dropped it and ran off)

( ?????)

- "what is that" ? ( pointing at the raw wool)
~ that is a fleece, straight from the sheep.
- " what is it made off"?
...

and of course the classic:
- Look honey, they are making wool over here...

  • I get that alllllllllll the time when I am doing demo spinning at Ren Faires...

'look honey she's looming...' (while I am sitting at a spinning wheel with no loom in sight)

'you must be a patient person (which I get with the knitting too) to sit and spin...'

    'do you use your string'...

'you don't have to kill the sheep to get the wool?'

    Yea... fun comments!
  • Wierdest one I ever ran into...
A little girl (about five ish...) started crying when told that the fiber being spun was bunny. The mother tried to "comfort" her by saying "It's OK honey, I'm sure that it was dead before they shaved it"
    • hahahahaha !!!
      • One I like to use when I'm spinning is "If I spin backward I'll get a sheep" The scary thing is that some people think that I'm serious...
And, I gotta admit that I get alot of the same carp that Aunti Pita hears all the time.
"look, she's weaving" (note little round wheel thingie)
        • I'm a spinner and I also do Living History reenacting; as a result I too have gotten a lot of strange comments and questions over the years. The ones that really stand out in my memory aret these:
          --"Are you making hair?"
-- "My Grandma used to sew on one of those." (pointing at my spinning wheel)
-- "What kind of loom are you using?" (again, pointing at my spinning wheel)
-- "How do you get the different colors?" (Yes, semi-standard question; but if the person asking is a small child, sometimes I will tell them that we feed the sheep kool-aid.)
And the comment, or a variation thereof, I hear most often: "If I had to do that to clothe my family, they would have to go naked."
  • I crochet everywhere I go. I know that crochet is not as well knowing as knitting, so I am generally not that bothered wen people ask me what I am knitting. But I just started knitting more and almost everywhere I go people are now asking me, "Oh what are you crocheting?" Are you kidding me.
  • I get the "What are you crocheting?" question all the time. It must be noted that I've only ever picked up a crochet needle 5 times in my life, and that was to pick up dropped stitches in my KNITTING.

My man sometimes gets concerned and asks me, needles flashing furiously, contented Mona-Lisa smile on my face, "Are you having fun, honey?"

I have to just smile and give him a hug, because he has no idea how much fun it is.
    • Needle felting brings out some real strange comments. I can almost always expect the following comments when doing a demo..

"what are you doing, voodoo ?"

"what did he do to you ?"

"ouch, ouch " (pretends to be doll..)

The funniest thing is, they all think that they are the first to make these comments...as if I never heard them all before..LOL
      • LOL.
What is your responce? " its therapy!! "

Like my felted sheep that I sell as pincushions. My "Voodoo sheep".
" there must be a sheep around with pains in its back."

Hmm, that gives me an idea : Accupuncture themed pincushions
        • I love the girl's comment apon hearing wool was from animals. She should have said- ewe!!!!!! The main focus is people when watching you don't realize how quick witted we are. As crafty folk are minds are as sharp as our felting needles. hehehehe
