yes, I do some basic card weaving.
Just the 4 forward, 4 backward things.
    Beginner tips? Let me think.
*Dont start with more then 12 cards. That is easy enough to handle in the beginning. And less time to get it set up.
*dont use too small cards, it will drive you nuts.
*make sure you load your yarns through the cards the right way ( direction). Otherwise your pattern doesnt come out right.
*it looks best when the 2 outside cards on both sides are the same colour as the yarn you weave with.
*have something to remind you which direction you are going. I use sometimes a pair of scissors. Put it on the table next to you. When the point is facing away from me, I go A,B,C,D. Then turn it around. When the point is facing me, I do D,C,B,A.
Just in case you get disturbed halfway.
    * use a rubber band to ty the card together when you want to put it away.

    Hope this helped a bit.
Do you do backstrap or a rigid loom?

Right now a backstrap. Am thinking of getting an inkle loom. Actually the origianl intent was inkle loom, then found out about card weaving...it cost less money to set up.

I am having trouble keeping all of my warp threads on one level. I mean on each level of the shed, top and bottom, the threads on the top of the cards seem to overlap and the same on the bottom.

yes, inkle, that is what I meant. ( I always mix those terms up. silly me)
Humm, I dont really understand what you are trying to explain. They overlap? How?
What yarn do you use? If you use wool maybe some get stuck.
Or are your cards not big enough so it doesnt seperate well enough?
Did you put your yarns though the same way on your card?

Does your pattern come out the way you want? Because when you look at cardweaving side ways, it looks very chaotic. Maybe it just looks strange.

By overlap, could you mean that they are twisting? Or does the overlap make it impossible to turn the cards either direction?

One problem I had when I started was getting the cards out of order, especially since I also use a backstrap loom. Make sure the cards are numbered and check the order occassionally.

Keep us updated with your weaving. If you can, post some pictures!
